DAVAO CITY—Vice mayor Rodrigo Duterte bared that the sample ballots of his local political party, Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod, will have Makabayan’s Teddy Casiño on top of the other “very few” senatorial aspirants that the party will be supporting in the coming elections.

Interviewed by NewsDesk Sunday evening, Duterte said he will make sure that “Teddy Casiño is Number 1 on the sample ballots.”

Duterte, who is running for mayor, said he and the entire party will be supporting the bid of Casiño to become senator as “he has the experience and the principle.”

“This is not a question of whether he wants to be senator of the country or not. This is about him being senator because he should be senator,” Duterte said.

And Duterte said the Philippines “would be lucky to have Casiño in the Senate.”

Casiño, who is running independent, is also a Representative of the progressive partylist group Bayan Muna.

The left

“I like him. He is firm, principled and one of the very few legislators who—and I am very sure of this—will never be eaten up by the system. He represents the true left,” Duterte said.

The vice mayor admitted that he finds affinity with Casiño and the sectors that he represents—the poor.

“Being a son of a poor man, I know all these issues about life and how hard life is. Where I came from made me truly left. When push comes to a shove, I will always be on the side of the poor. If there is a class struggle in Davao, I will always side with the poor,” Duterte said.

“I know Teddy will always stand for the poor,” he added.

Duterte also said that Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod will only back a very “select” senatorial aspirants. These, he said, are those who have been consistently showing concern and support to the city of Davao.

“I must be honest. I will only support those who have supported Davao City. And there are only about four of them,” he said.

Duterte particularly mentioned Senators Bong Revilla and  Allan Peter Cayetano as those who have always been supportive of the programs of Davao.

They, too, he said, have always been giving assistance to a number of cancer patients who are also being supported by the vice mayor himself.
