Congressman Teddy Acevedo Casiño represents a new generation of Filipino leaders – young, principled, competent and with a heart for the masses. A consistent voice against corruption and abuse, Teddy is best known for upholding the rights of the poor and marginalized sectors as a three-term party list representative of Bayan Muna.
• Social Reformist
Teddy started his political involvement as a high school student at La Salle Green Hills, where he volunteered for the National Movement for Free Elections (NAMFREL) during the 1986 snap elections and took part in the EDSA People Power uprising. In college, he was editor-in-chief of the student paper, was elected national president of the College Editors Guild of the Philippines, and graduated with a degree in AB Sociology from UP Los Baños in 1993.
After college, Teddy immersed himself in the labor movement under the Kilusang Mayo Uno. He became involved in various social causes as secretary-general of the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan prior to being elected to Congress in 2004.
• Writer and journalist
Teddy is an experienced writer and journalist. He was a columnist for BusinessWorld from 1995 to 2004, and had a brief stint in TV as a reporter for ABS-CBN’s “Hoy Gising” and “The Correspondents”. He currently writes a column for the broadsheet Good Morning Philippines and maintains a blog at http://www.teddycasino.wordpress.com.
• Progressive Legislator
Teddy is the current chairperson of the Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship Development, where he champions the welfare of micro, small and medium enterprises. He is also senior vice chairperson of the Committee on Higher and Technical Education, safeguarding the youth’s right to affordable and quality education.
In performing his legislative and oversight functions, Teddy has served with integrity, honesty and excellence. He has never figured in any anomaly or scandal and has fully earned and deserved the people’s trust.
• Dedicated family man
Teddy’s family is his main source of strength and inspiration. He leads a simple life with his wife Ruth and children Elian (8) and Emilio (3). The future of his two sons is what keeps him striving for a better kind of politics and a truly just and democratic government and society.
With his idealism, sterling track record and platform for change, Congressman Teddy Casiño could very well be our next representative in the Senate. ###
